The story begins in southeast Brazil when Alex Atala opened his first restaurant, D.O.M., on an abandoned street in São Paulo. European ingredients had suddenly begun to come into the country and demand was high for European-style restaurants. The concept for D.O.M., however, was completely different: Atala wanted to cook local dishes with local ingredients even though Brazilians tended to only eat their native Brazilian food at home. Nobody thought the concept behind this restaurant would actually work.
As it turns out, it did. Using local Brazilian and wild Amazonian ingredients to reinvent traditional, home-grown foods into sophisticated dishes eventually drew people to Atala’s restaurant. Several years since its inception in 1999, D.O.M. has found incredible success and brought Atala much acclaim. He’s now the leading authority on Brazilian food worldwide.
Today, Atala works to promote sustainable farming and protect indigenous tribes through his program ATA. Between his awards for fourth Best Restaurant in the World in 2012, second Best Restaurant in Latin America in 2013, and Best Restaurant in Brazil in 2013, and his recognition as the only chef on Time Magazine’s list of 100 Most Influential People in the World, Alex Atala has followed an incredible path to success that is marking permanent innovation in Brazil’s culinary culture.
