The Best Ways to Use Honey

The Best Ways to Use Honey

Casa da Prisca’s honey from the Portugal Box inspired this post. It’s smooth and floral and delicious with so much more than just toast. Honey is full of incredible health benefits. If you’re looking for ideas to empty that jar from the box, read on for inspiration. We can all benefit from more honey in our lives.

1. Make barbecue sauce

Mix honey, ketchup, molasses, and brown sugar with a variety of herbs and seasonings (oregano, paprika, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce all work well) to make a basic barbecue sauce. It’s fantastic served with ribs, chicken, and steak.

2. Glaze chicken wings

To add a burst of flavor to an otherwise classic wings dish, glaze the cooked meat with a mixture of honey, soy sauce, minced garlic, hot sauce, and finely chopped scallion. Throw it under the broiler to crisp up the skin.

3. Whisk into a vinaigrette

Honey, just like mustard, is a great addition to vinaigrette because it thickens the mixture. To make your own, whisk honey with vinegar until smooth, then slowly add olive oil and season with salt, pepper, and minced garlic.

4. Sweeten baked goods

To make a healthier version of any baked good, replace sugar with honey (1 cup sugar is equivalent to roughly ⅔ cup honey). Honey’s sweetness is more subtle than sugar and changes the texture of baked goods only slightly. Plus, foods with honey usually remain moist for a longer period of time!

5. Make honey butter

Delicious on toast, breakfast pastries, and cakes, honey butter is incredibly easy to make. Just mix 1 stick butter with 1 tablespoon honey and any other add-ins (such as cinnamon or cardamom).
